Wheel Care & Maintenance
Vorsteiner wheels are engineered to deliver exceptional performance, precision, and distinctive design. Proper care and routine maintenance are essential to preserving their appearance and protecting their finish from premature deterioration.
Exposure to brake dust, road debris, environmental contaminants, harsh chemicals, and improper cleaning techniques can damage wheel finishes over time. Following these recommended maintenance practices will help preserve the appearance and condition of your Vorsteiner wheels.
General Wheel Cleaning Guidelines
We recommend cleaning your wheels regularly using a mild, pH-neutral automotive wheel cleaner and non-abrasive cleaning materials.
- Allow wheels to cool: Never apply cleaning products to hot wheels or wheels exposed to direct sunlight. Allow wheels and braking components to cool completely before cleaning.
- Rinse thoroughly: Use clean water to remove loose dirt, brake dust, and road debris before applying cleaning products.
- Use an appropriate cleaner: Select a mild, pH-neutral, non-acidic wheel cleaner specifically approved by its manufacturer for your wheel's particular finish.
- Clean gently: Use a clean microfiber wash mitt, soft detailing brush, or other non-abrasive cleaning tool. Avoid excessive pressure and aggressive scrubbing.
- Rinse completely: Thoroughly remove all cleaning products and residue with clean water. Never allow chemicals or cleaning solutions to dry on the wheel surface.
- Dry immediately: Use a clean, soft microfiber towel to dry the wheels and minimize water spots and mineral deposits.
Recommended Wheel Cleaning Products
Vorsteiner recommends using mild, pH-neutral wheel cleaning products formulated for automotive wheel finishes. Products such as Chemical Guys Diablo Wheel & Rim Cleaner may be suitable for certain finishes when used according to the manufacturer's instructions.
However, not all cleaning products are compatible with every wheel finish. Customers should verify compatibility with their specific wheel finish before use, particularly on polished, anodized, specialty-coated, or custom-finished wheels.
Important: Vorsteiner does not guarantee the compatibility, performance, or safety of third-party cleaning products. Always follow the cleaner manufacturer's instructions, including dilution ratios, application methods, and recommended contact times. Test any new cleaning product on a small, inconspicuous area before applying it to the entire wheel.
Wheel Finish Care
Different wheel finishes may require different cleaning and maintenance procedures. The following recommendations are general guidelines and should not replace finish-specific instructions provided by Vorsteiner.
Painted and Clear-Coated Finishes
Use a mild, pH-neutral automotive cleaner with a soft microfiber wash mitt. Avoid abrasive polishing compounds, harsh chemical cleaners, and aggressive scrubbing that may scratch or degrade the protective coating.
Powder-Coated Finishes
Clean with mild automotive soap or an appropriate pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid harsh solvents, abrasive brushes, and chemical products that may discolor or compromise the coating.
Polished and Specialty Finishes
Polished, anodized, brushed, and other specialty finishes may be more sensitive to chemical exposure and improper cleaning techniques. Use only products specifically approved for the applicable finish. Do not use metal polish, abrasive compounds, or chemical brighteners unless expressly approved for that finish.
If you are uncertain about your wheel's finish or the appropriate cleaning method, contact Vorsteiner before applying any cleaning or polishing products.
Cleaning Products and Practices to Avoid
To reduce the risk of staining, discoloration, corrosion, scratching, or premature finish deterioration, avoid the following:
- Acidic, highly alkaline, or caustic wheel cleaners.
- Household cleaning chemicals, bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, and strong solvents.
- Abrasive brushes, steel wool, scouring pads, and aggressive polishing compounds.
- Automatic car washes that use harsh chemical detergents or abrasive wheel-cleaning equipment.
- Applying cleaning products to hot wheels or in direct sunlight.
- Allowing wheel cleaners, degreasers, or other chemicals to dry on the wheel surface.
- Directing high-pressure water at close range toward wheel finishes, valve stems, seals, or hardware.
- Using unapproved metal polishing products on painted, coated, anodized, or specialty finishes.
Routine Maintenance and Protection
Regular maintenance helps reduce the buildup of contaminants that may affect wheel appearance and finish longevity.
- Clean regularly: Remove brake dust, road grime, and environmental contaminants before significant buildup occurs.
- Remove contaminants promptly: Bird droppings, road salt, chemical residue, and other potentially corrosive substances should be removed as soon as practical using appropriate cleaning methods.
- Inspect wheel finishes: Periodically check for scratches, chips, discoloration, corrosion, or other signs of finish deterioration.
- Use appropriate protection: Finish-compatible automotive sealants or ceramic coatings may provide additional protection when professionally applied and properly maintained.
- Address damage promptly: Damaged protective coatings can expose underlying surfaces to moisture and contaminants. Contact a qualified wheel refinishing professional or Vorsteiner for guidance.
